Ingredients

  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced (Granny Smith work well)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 quarter cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 half teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 quarter teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 half cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 quarter cup brown sugar, packed
  • as needed cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • as needed cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix together the milk, egg, vanilla extract, and brown sugar until smooth.
  3. Pour the wet ingredient mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; some lumps are okay.
  4. Gently fold in the diced apples. The batter will be thick and chunky.
  5. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat. To test if the oil is ready, drop a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and float to the surface.
  6. Using a small cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop rounded spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil (fry in batches to avoid overcrowding). Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  7. Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the fritter bites and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. While still warm, dust the fritter bites with powdered sugar. For added sweetness, consider serving with a drizzle of caramel sauce.

💡 Chef's Notes

Arrange the fritter bites on a serving plate and dust with additional powdered sugar. You can serve them alongside a small bowl of caramel sauce for dipping, and garnish with thin apple slices for an extra touch. Enjoy!
