Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 cup dulce de leche
  • 4 cups marshmallows
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • a pinch sea salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Flaky sea salt for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Butter: In a large saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Continue cooking until the butter turns a golden brown color and develops a nutty aroma, about 5-7 minutes. Be careful not to burn it!
  2. Add Dulce de Leche and Marshmallows: Lower the heat to medium-low, and add the dulce de leche to the browned butter. Stir until well combined. Add the marshmallows and mix until they are completely melted and smooth, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Combine with Rice Krispies: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the Rice Krispies cereal. Make sure to coat the cereal evenly with the marshmallow mixture.
  4. Season & Flavor: Add a pinch of sea salt and vanilla extract to the mixture. Stir well to combine.
  5. Press into a Pan: Line a 9×13 inch baking dish with parchment paper for easy removal. Pour the mixture into the prepared dish and, using a spatula or your clean fingers (dampened slightly), press it down evenly.
  6. Cool and Set: Allow the Rice Krispie treats to cool to room temperature, about 30-60 minutes. If you want to speed up the process, you can place them in the refrigerator.
  7. Cut and Serve: Once cooled and set, cut into squares or rectangles. If desired, sprinkle flaky sea salt on top for an added flavor contrast.

💡 Chef's Notes

For an extra touch, sprinkle flaky sea salt on top before serving.
