Ingredients

  • 500 g beef sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 whole bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece ginger, grated
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, for flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 3 whole green onions, chopped for garnish
  • optional sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, and cornstarch. Mix well to coat the beef and let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef in a single layer and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned but not fully cooked. Remove from the wok and set aside.
  3. In the same wok, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add the sliced onions and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until they begin to soften and caramelize.
  4. Add the minced garlic, grated ginger, and sliced bell pepper to the pan. Stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant and the bell pepper is slightly tender.
  5. Return the partially cooked beef to the wok, along with any juices that have accumulated. Stir-fry everything together for an additional 3-4 minutes, allowing the beef to finish cooking and the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Once the beef is cooked through and the onions are perfectly caramelized, remove from heat.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if using.
