Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • to taste filling of your choice (e.g., stir-fried vegetables, tofu, or pulled chicken)
  • for garnish fresh cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the yeast mixture along with vegetable oil.
  4. Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and knead it for another minute. Divide the dough into equal portions (about 10-12) and roll each portion into a ball.
  7. Flatten each ball into a circle about 4 inches in diameter. Place your choice of filling in the center of each circle, then carefully fold the edges over the filling and pinch to seal.
  8. Line a steamer basket with parchment paper and place the filled buns in the basket, leaving space between them to expand.
  9. Fill a pot or wok with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the steamer basket over the simmering water, cover, and steam the buns for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are fluffy and cooked through.
  10. Carefully remove the buns from the steamer and allow them to cool for a few minutes. Serve warm, garnished with fresh cilantro if desired.
