Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped or ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese or Gruyère
  • 4 pieces burger buns, preferably toasted
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • for garnish Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
  3. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, fresh thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Pour in the beef broth and let it simmer for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  4. While the onion mixture is simmering, season the ground beef (or turkey) with salt and pepper. Form into 4 equal patties, making an indentation in the center of each one to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
  5. Preheat your grill or a griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium, or until they reach your desired doneness.
  6. In the final minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover to melt the cheese.
  7. To assemble, place each cheeseburger on a toasted bun and top generously with the caramelized onion mixture.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.

💡 Chef's Notes

Serve with a side of crispy French fries or a simple green salad for a complete meal, and consider adding a small bowl of extra beef broth for dipping on the side!
