French Onion Soup Burgers Flavorful and Savory Treat
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped or ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- to taste Salt and pepper
- 4 slices Swiss cheese or Gruyère
- 4 pieces burger buns, preferably toasted
- 1 cup beef broth
- for garnish Fresh parsley, chopped
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
- Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, fresh thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Pour in the beef broth and let it simmer for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- While the onion mixture is simmering, season the ground beef (or turkey) with salt and pepper. Form into 4 equal patties, making an indentation in the center of each one to prevent them from puffing up while cooking.
- Preheat your grill or a griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium, or until they reach your desired doneness.
- In the final minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover to melt the cheese.
- To assemble, place each cheeseburger on a toasted bun and top generously with the caramelized onion mixture.
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.
💡 Chef's Notes
Serve with a side of crispy French fries or a simple green salad for a complete meal, and consider adding a small bowl of extra beef broth for dipping on the side!
