Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg until fully combined. Then, mix in the molasses and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the hot water. Start and finish with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
