Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 0.5 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 4 sub rolls sub rolls
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • for garnish Fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, oregano, basil, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  2. Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. You should get approximately 16 meatballs.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through and browned on the outside.
  4. While the meatballs are baking, heat the marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat until warm. You can add a splash of water if it seems too thick.
  5. Slice the sub rolls open lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Place 4 meatballs inside each roll and generously spoon marinara sauce over the top.
  6. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the meatballs and sauce.
  7. Place the assembled subs under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Keep a close eye to prevent burning!
  8. Carefully remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and serve immediately.

💡 Chef's Notes

Keep an eye on the cheese while broiling to prevent burning.
