Old-Fashioned Salisbury Steak with Rich Mushroom Gravy
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into oval patties about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the Salisbury steaks and cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until they are browned and tender.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir well to combine, cooking for an additional minute.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth and soy sauce, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Once the gravy thickens, return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet. Simmer everything together for another 5-10 minutes until the steaks are heated through and the flavors meld.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, adding more salt or pepper as needed.
