Ingredients

  • 1 lb white American cheese, cubed
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 jalapeño finely chopped (seeds removed for less heat)
  • 1/4 cup diced tomatoes (fresh or canned)
  • 1/4 cup diced green onions
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • to taste salt salt
  • as needed tortilla chips for serving

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, combine the cubed white American cheese and whole milk. Stir frequently until the cheese begins to melt.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with a few tablespoons of the melted cheese mixture to create a slurry. Add the slurry back into the saucepan.
  3. Gradually stir until the cheese sauce thickens and becomes smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the chopped jalapeño, diced tomatoes, green onions, cilantro, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt to the cheese mixture. Stir until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
  5. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until the mixture is hot throughout.
  6. Once done, remove from heat and serve immediately while warm.

💡 Chef's Notes

Serve Queso Blanco in a warm bowl surrounded by a platter of colorful tortilla chips. Garnish with a sprig of cilantro and a sprinkle of additional diced tomatoes for an inviting look.
