Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well and form into 4 equal patties.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.
  3. While the patties are cooking, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in another skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until they are caramelized, about 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread. Then, if you like a bit of spice, mix the sriracha sauce into the mayo before spreading.
  5. Assemble the melts: On the unbuttered side of two slices of bread, layer the cheesy patty and top with caramelized onions. Place another slice of bread, mayo side up, on top to form a sandwich.
  6. In the same skillet used for the patties, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Cook each sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
