Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 0.5 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • optional sliced pickles
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of oil and sauté the chopped onion until translucent, around 5 minutes.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 7-10 minutes.
  4. Drain excess fat from the skillet if necessary.
  5. In a bowl, combine ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well to create a sauce.
  6. Pour the sauce into the skillet with the beef mixture and stir to combine. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is nicely coated and heated through.
  7. While the mixture is simmering, toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or in a pan until golden brown.
  8. Assemble the sandwiches by placing a generous spoonful of the beef mixture on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles if desired.
  9. Optionally, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the hot beef mixture to let it melt slightly.
  10. Close the sandwich with the top half of the bun and serve immediately while hot.

💡 Chef's Notes

Serve the sandwiches on a wooden board with a side of crispy fries or sweet potato wedges. Garnish with fresh herbs for an appetizing touch.
