The Original Joe Sandwich Flavor-Packed Classic Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 0.5 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- to taste salt and pepper
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- optional sliced pickles
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of oil and sauté the chopped onion until translucent, around 5 minutes.
- Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 7-10 minutes.
- Drain excess fat from the skillet if necessary.
- In a bowl, combine ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, chili powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well to create a sauce.
- Pour the sauce into the skillet with the beef mixture and stir to combine. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is nicely coated and heated through.
- While the mixture is simmering, toast the hamburger buns in a toaster or in a pan until golden brown.
- Assemble the sandwiches by placing a generous spoonful of the beef mixture on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and pickles if desired.
- Optionally, place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the hot beef mixture to let it melt slightly.
- Close the sandwich with the top half of the bun and serve immediately while hot.
💡 Chef's Notes
Serve the sandwiches on a wooden board with a side of crispy fries or sweet potato wedges. Garnish with fresh herbs for an appetizing touch.
