Ingredients

4 large bread rolls (sourdough or any sturdy type)

1 pound ground beef (or turkey)

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 red bell pepper, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon mustard powder

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Slice the top off each bread roll and hollow out the insides using your fingers or a small spoon, creating a bowl. Set aside the bread you remove for later use, if desired.

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground meat, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until browned (about 5-7 minutes).

Add the chopped onion, diced red bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, mustard powder, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is heated through and thickened.

Remove the skillet from heat and if desired, stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese to create a melty filling.

Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly into each hollowed bread bowl.

Place the filled bread bowls on a baking sheet. If using, sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top of each filled bowl.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the bread is lightly toasted and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.
