Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1/2 lb ground pork

1 cup breadcrumbs

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

4 sub rolls

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Prep the Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, oregano, basil, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Form the Meatballs: Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. You should get approximately 16 meatballs.

Cook the Meatballs: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through and browned on the outside.

Heat the Marinara Sauce: While the meatballs are baking, heat the marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat until warm. You can add a splash of water if it seems too thick.

Assemble the Subs: Slice the sub rolls open lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Place 4 meatballs inside each roll and generously spoon marinara sauce over the top.

Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the meatballs and sauce.

Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled subs under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Keep a close eye to prevent burning!

Garnish and Serve: Carefully remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and serve immediately.
