Ingredients

1 loaf of crusty French bread

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

4 cloves garlic, minced

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese (or any preferred melting cheese)

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions: In a large pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes. If necessary, reduce heat to prevent burning.

Add Garlic and Thyme: Once the onions are caramelized, add the minced garlic and thyme. Stir for another 2-3 minutes until the garlic is fragrant. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

Prepare the Bread: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Cut the French bread in half lengthwise and place both halves on a baking sheet, cut side up.

Make the Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, mix the remaining 2 tablespoons of melted butter with a pinch of salt. Brush this mixture generously over both halves of the bread.

Assemble the Topping: Spread the caramelized onion and garlic mixture evenly over the cut sides of the bread. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese generously on top.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly with a light golden color.

Garnish and Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color and serve warm.
